MUSUBI is back in the dry cleaner — a San Francisco-born, LA- and New York-based DJ and producer whose sound moves between house, electronic, dubstep, and baile trap.

please introduce yourself.

my name is MUSUBI. i'm a dj and producer born and raised in the Bay Area, now based between LA and New York. my sound lives mostly in house and electronic, but i like to move around with it. sometimes dubstep or baile trap depending on the energy. i come from a Chinese, Japanese, and Burmese background, and i think that mix of cultures naturally shaped how i hear and mix music. it's always felt natural for me to blend sounds that aren't "supposed" to go together. i like my sets to feel a little unpredictable, sexy, high energy, and playful all at once. i'm always chasing that moment where the room shifts and everyone's in sync.

if you had to describe your music using only fruits and veggies, which ones would you choose?

definitely something spicy and something sweet. spicy, like chili, because i want it to hit you in your chest. i love bass you can feel, not just hear. and then something sweet, like strawberries, to balance it out. keep it playful and a little soft around the edges.

what do you miss the most about your hometown?

i grew up in the Bay Area, and i miss a lot of the intangible things. like the feeling of just walking around the city, the energy, the familiarity. i miss Chinatown a lot, and all the little pockets of neighborhoods i used to spend time in. the food, my family, my friends, the views and scenery. the Bay just has a really specific feeling that stays with you.

if you encounter an alien and it asks you to play earth music, which song would you like to play?

probably something from Yuno Miles. maybe Unwritten. i feel like that song is very human. it's emotional, uplifting, nostalgic. a good mix of chaos and sincerity feels like an accurate introduction to Earth.

any closing words?

my goal is really just to share my love of music and build community through it. music has always been a safe space for me, and i hope my sets and my releases can feel like that for other people too. i want to do what i love for a long time and take it as far as i can. i'm not in a rush, i just want it to be real and lasting. i also have a lot more music on the way. last year i started putting things out, and this year i'm building on that, so you can definitely expect more releases soon. i'm really excited about what's coming. at the end of the day, i just want people to feel something real, whether that's in person with me or in their headphones.
